Images and Empowerment - A photography Workshop

IMAGES AND EMPOWERMENT
A Photography Workshop by Alex Felipe

Images can be a source of empowerment. It can empower the self and others like us by letting them know that they are not alone. Using our own struggles as individuals and as a community as inspiration we will explore portraiture, still life, and event photography with the intent to tell our stories.

We will delve into the immigrant's experience in Canada. While the art of how to take good photographs will of course be a central component to the course, we will work to go beyond a esthetics and infuse our images with emotional, intellectual, and political meaning.

Alex Felipe is a freelance photographer / photojournalist. His work includes pictures for Now Magazine, official photographer of NDP candidate during the last elections and a photographer for GlobalAware Independent Media. Alex is also an active member of Siklab-Ontario, a migrant workers organization based in Toronto.

The Workshop is a six-week theory and lots of hands on. At the end of the course, participants will be able to take well composed photographs and have a basic technical knowledge of camera operation, read the language of images. They will be able to take photographs that go beyond simply recording an image of a physical person, place, or event. Most importantly, Record images that can be of use as testimonials to their
life experience.

The Workshop will be held at the SEAS Center: 708 Gerrard St. East (5 minutes walk north of Broadview) 1st Batch will start on Sunday, May 20, 2007
